Meals a lifesaver for home bound couple


Derry Roberts must stay home to care for his wife, who has Alzheimer’s.

There were times Derry and Anna Robers had no food in the house, but Derry couldn’t leave his wife home alone while he ran to the grocery store.


It is hard for Derry, 80, to get Anna, 77, in the car now that she’s in the late stages Alzheimer’s disease Enter Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches.


The nonprofit organisation’s volunteers started delivering meals to the couple’s home five days a week every week about two months ago. They’ve even providers dog food and grooming for the couple’s playful, 3-year-old Shih Tzu, Oakley.


Anna’s meals are paid for by a different nonprofit, and Derry receives his for less than $30 a month.


“They’ve been a godsend. They’ve been great,” Derry Roberts said as he sat in the living room of their Palm Beach Gardens home Monday. “They’re keeping us alive.”
