Howie 1843
Peter Howie, residing at Clashfarquhar, and Jane Yule, his wife, had a daughter born 27th July 1843, and baptized Margaret Yule.
Notes
“Clashfarquhar” was rendered as “Glashfarquhar” on the baptism of Peter Howie, father to Margaret.
The element “Clash-“ derives from the Gaelic clais (a hollow, ditch, or furrow in the land - a very common Scots/Gaelic topographic term found across northeast Scotland). When spoken in a Gaelic-influenced accent, the initial cl- sound can shift toward gl- and back again depending on the speaker and the transcriber’s ear. Neither spelling is “wrong”, they are simply two attempts by English-writing clerks and enumerators to render the same spoken sound on paper.
