Dear Barrie,


As you know, after 1854 it was a requirement of Scottish law that births, marriages and deaths to be registered. I enclose a leaflet showing how records were kept prior to 1855.


I am now in a position to give you some information regarding you great-grandmother Lucy Matheson.


Her name appears in the registers as Elizabeth, Lucy, Louisa and Elspet.


There was much illiteracy among the people in the 1800s, many of the signatures in the registers were made by an X. There are a number of discrepancies in the figures you have received from the census records.


George Mackay, fisherman, married to ELIZABETH MATHESON, died at Fishertown, Dornoch on 25 November 1894, ages 87 years. His parents were William Mackay, fisherman (deceased) and Janet Mackay, maiden surname Macrae (deceased). The death was registered by his son William Mackay.


LUCY MACKAY, widow of George Mackay, fisherman, died at Fishertown, Dornoch on 23 August 1896, aged 82 years. Her parents were Hector Matheson, crofter (deceased), and Barbara Matheson, maiden surname Mackay (deceased). The death was registered by John Mackay’s son-in-law.


Birth on 5 November 1855 at Embo Village of Ann Mackay. Father George Mackay, fisherman, 40 years in Embo village, married at Dornoch in 1838. 5 boys and three girls living. Mother, Louisa Mackay, maiden surname Matheson, age 35 years. Her ninth child. Birthplace Helmsdale.


Birth on 12 April 1861 at Embo of James Mackay. Father of George Mackay, fisherman. Mother Lucy Mackay, maiden surname Matheson. Married on 16 October 1840 at Dornoch.

1869 16 November at Poles, Dornoch. Kenneth Mackay (54) fisherman, Embo, Dornoch (widower) married Barbara Mackay (19) Embo, Dornoch, daughter of George Mackay, fisherman, and Louisa Mackay, maiden surname Matheson.


1873 21 October at Dornoch. Alexander Mackay (22), fisherman, Embo, Dornoch, married Catherine Mackay (17), Embo, Dornoch, daughter of George Mackay, fisherman, and Louisa Mackay, maiden surname Matheson.


1876 17 October at Dornoch. Adam Cumming (27), fisherman, Fishertown, Dornoch married Ann Mackay (18) Fishertown, Dornoch, daughter of George Mackay, fisherman, and Elizabeth Mackay, maiden surname Matheson.


1876 7 November at Dornoch. William Mackay (30) fisherman, Fishertown Dornoch, son of George Mackay, fisherman and Elizabeth Mackay, maiden surname Matheson, married Catherine Grant (24) Fishertown, Dornoch.


1877 23 October at Dornoch. Alexander Mackay (28) fisherman, FIshertown, Dornoch, son of George Mackay, fisherman, and Louisa Mackay, maiden surname Matheson, married Ann Mackay (18) Embo


1881 1 December at Littletown, Dornoch. Donald Mackay (26), farm servant, son of George Mackay, fisherman, and Elspet Mackay, maiden surname Matheson, married Betsy Mackay (25), Dornoch, daughter of Kenneth Mackay, shoemaker (journeyman) and Jane Mackay, maiden surname Gordon.


1888 23 October at Dornoch. James Mackay (24) fisherman, Fishertown, Dornoch, son of George Mackay, fisherman and Elizabeth Mackay, maiden surname Matheson, married Isabella Mackay (20) Fishertown, Dornoch.


1892 24 March at the Public Schoolhouse, Fishertown, Dornoch, John Mackay (27) fisherman, Fishertown, Dornoch, married Jane Mackay (29), Fishertown, Dornoch, daughter of George Mackay and Lucy Mackay, maiden Surname Matheson.


I’ve gone through the marriage registered from 1855 to 1900 in respect of Dornoch, and the only Matheson married to a George Mackay is your great-grandmother.
